In 2012, I was awarded a Travelling Fellowship from the Journal of Experimental Biology to visit Arizona State University in the USA to work with Prof Michael Angilletta, a leading expert on thermal adaptation in animals. Together we investigated the effect of temperature on the evolution of metabolism in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) to test the century-old controversial theory of metabolic cold adaptation. Our findings were recently published in the journal Evolution (link here), and were highlighted in Evolution's new "Digests" section by Dr Daniel Fabian (link here).

Data for the metabolic rate of fruit flies evolved in different thermal environments. See our paper in Evolution  for further details.
